Titanium, the 22nd element in the periodic table has many interesting chemical properties. Discovered in 1791, it wasn't purified until 1910. Titanium is as strong as steel, but almost half again as light. Compared to aluminum, titanium is twice as strong, less brittle, yet it is only 60% heavier. It also flexes further than steel without yielding. Titanium is also a very inert metal. That means it doesn't corrode easily. Importantly to the jewelry industry, titanium is very hypoallergenic due to its molecular structure.
Titanium is used in the aerospace industry, surgical equipment, paint, pigments, golf clubs and anything where lightweight strength and ability need to withstand temperature extremes. Titanium bicycles were being created by 1991. Now the lightweight strength is making its way into the fashion industry. Eyeglass frames made of titanium are strong, light weight, almost unbreakable, and by anodizing titanium it can be made into colorful fashion statements. Titanium rings are easy to care for. Clean them with non-abrasive soaps or cleaners, dry them with a soft cloth. Standard buffing and polishing tools equipped with slightly more abrasive materials than used on gold can restore the finish to a titanium ring.
Black Titanium is a specially processed titanium. It is even more difficult to cut than titanium, so most rings are "blackened" only half way through to allow for emergencies.
